Birds Funeral Services

44 Loads Road, Holymoorside, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S42 7EU
Since 1913 the Birds family have dedicated themselves to serving the people of Holymoorside, Chesterfield and the surrounding areas in their time of need. The business was started in 1913 by John Birds (Senior) who came from Elton, Matlock and established the business as a wheelwright , joiner, builder and funeral director. In those days it fell on the local builder or carpenter to act as the undertaker as they had the necessary skills to make the coffin. The term undertaker comes from the phrase ’to undertake the arrangements’ .Although these days we prefer to be called Funeral Directors most people still call us undertakers. John became a very active member of the Parish Council ,as well as being a member of the Methodist Chapel. He led the Sunday School there for fifty years and also became a lay preacher in the local area. Purchase of land was made from the Duke of Devonshire and a family home was built near to the workshop premises. John and his wife Bertha had two sons, Harold and Sydney. Harold took over the family business when his father eventually retired. He was very involved in the Parish Council and followed his father, John, onto Chesterfield Rural District Council when he died in 1958. Harold was Vice-Chairman of North-East Derbyshire District Council when he died suddenly at the age of seventy. Sydney, his younger son, following his military service, went on to Sheffield University to achieve his ambition to go into teaching, eventually becoming Headteacher of Holymoorside School until his retirement. Sadly in 1977/1978 both brothers died quite suddenly within six weeks of each other. John(Junior) had taken over the business in 1975, just two years before his father died but after a few years started planning to close the building side of the business and go completely into the funeral trade. John made changes to our premises. A new Chapel of Rest was built along with a Reception area and the original workshop became the joinery area. In 2001 the building side was finally closed down. Soon after this Liz, John’s daughter took the decision to leave teaching and come into the family business. Our premises were extended and we now have a small function room if mourners would like refreshments following a funeral. David, our son, although working and living in Oxford is involved with providing all our advances in computing, printing and necessary equipment. We continue to uphold the same values and traditions of the family and in times of need give our caring and personal attention. Our aim is to support and help you through difficult times and make a sad day a treasured memory in years to come.
